Music for Mondrian Podcast with Emilie Conway for the National Gallery of Ireland

Part 1

IMC’s BAN BAM podcasts have been so inspiring and comforting for me over the lockdown months. Warm and very skilful host, Aoife Concannon, interviews a series of female artists about what inspires them and their creative processes. I was surprised and delighted when Aoife invited me for interview!! .... And for the first time I talk about, well a new song for me, that of finding my voice as an artist, within disability rights activism.

The sidelining of the voices of disabled people throughout the pandemic, and sadly yet again as we open up, together with my experience of 2 episodes of sudden onset hearing loss in under 12 months became an invitation (!) for me to reflect. I realised I've always avoided/skirted around acknowledging and integrating the ongoing impact of having albinism and a visual impairment, for fear of exclusion or marginalisation.

Please be patient! I'm totally still "finding my voice" with this but I realised my not speaking up would not make the world a better place for me or those who come after me...

Very grateful to Improvised Music Company for the opportunity to talk about my work and especially to host, Aoife Concannon for her very warm, welcoming interview style that put me right at ease!

Talking about VOICES, an event I created and hosted for Dublin City Council’s Social Inclusion Week which gave people with disabilities a platform to share their experiences through art, music and words.
