Jazz for All Seasons!

I sing familiar jazz standards, but I also love to seek out lesser known standards for interpretation which I blend with my own compositions, spoken word and poetry. I find I’m attracted to particular themes and concentrations which have proven fertile ground for inspiration Jazz and Art/Literature, Jazz and Children, and Jazz and Disability.

My work of course goes beyond these areas. I love collaborations and this is at the heart of a lot of my work. Perhaps it is the creative liveliness of collaboration that I love; the disparate and similar, of commonalities and divergence all of which can be brought together through music in a performance that, for this collaboration, is organic and lively and surprising!

Jazz on a Summer’s Day

The title of today's programme reflects the famous film, "Jazz on a Summer's Day,' about the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival by Bert Stern and director Aram Avakian.  The film weaves stellar performances by jazz greats like Anita O’Day, Louis Armstrong, and Thelonious Monk with images of water, yachts, sun hats, an attentive audience (eating ice-creams!) and quieter more intimate rehearsal moments.  The music ranges from jazz standards like "Tea for Two," to blues to experimental.

Inspired by this film, we bring you our "Jazz on a Summer's Day," in music that sings the lightness and brightness of summer, with the sparkle of some well known standards as well as the twinkle of hidden gems.

Emilie Sings Billie

Emilie Sings Billie is a perennial favourite and sells out every time. Emilie first created the show in 2009 and it has been supported by the Arts Council.

The Irish Times preview: Ella FitzGerald may be the gold standard, and Sarah Vaughan may have won the admiration of the musicians, but of all the great women singers of jazz's classic era, Billie Holiday is the most loved today, perhaps because her frankly emotional delivery sounds most "modern" to our ears. Dublin vocalist Emilie Conway – known for her thoughtful projects paying tribute to writer Maeve Brennan and composer Alex Wilder – is the special guest at guitarist Aengus Hackett's weekly JazzGate series, delving into the "Lady Day" songbook.

Friends of Alec Wilder presents
2021 Annual Wilder Concert
First International Event

"I go back to songs like I go back to an old friend, a garden, a fireplace, like a cat that comes back after being away..." - Alec Wilder

This is exactly what it felt like for me coming back to Alec's songs for this very special performance, particularly after all the lockdowns. Singing this music with my musicians was a delight and a homecoming.

It's also very important for me to acknowledge that my research of Alec's music and the subsequent album, Dear World, would not exist in the way that it does without Judy Bell, and the heart and the harmony of her encyclopedic knowledge and experience, of which she gave so generously.

I'd also like to thank Allen Smith, of Jazz on the Terrace, here in Ireland, for inspiring me to research Alec's music when he praised my version of I'll Be Around on my debut album, The Secret of a Rose! Subsequently, Jazz on the Terrace won an award from the Arts Council of Ireland to support a nationwide tour for us to perform the fruits of that research with Dear World: Emilie Conway Sings Alec Wilder.

La Vie, L’Amour: Emilie Sings Edith Piaf

The music Edith Piaf snag is enlightening, and affirming. She really addresses the whole spectrum of life, of joy and pain and loss and, in the end, always insists gratitude and love, a love that is all the more real and beautiful precisely because of all the "larmes" (tears):

Mais moi, j'ai dans le cœur de quoi toujours aimer,
J'aurai toujours assez de larmes pour pleurer,
J'aurai toujours assez de rire pour effacer,
Les tristes souvenirs, acroches, ou passes,
Je veux toujours aimer, je veux toujours souffrir.
Si je n'dois plus aimer, moi je préfère mourir.
Mais, moi, j'ai dans le cœur de quoi toujours aimer,

Swing into Summer: A Fundraiser for Phil Ware

The Irish Jazz community was shocked to learn of the serious sudden illness of our own Phil Ware, pianist, teacher, bandleader, mentor and pivotal artist in our community. Phil’s playing is unforgettable and I remember well when I first heard it and immediately became an eager disciple of his Monday night trio gigs at JJ Smyths.

Swing into Summer on Sunday July 11th with a packed virtual gala concert of favourite jazz standards and original music from some of Ireland’s finest artists, with a bit of everything you’ll enjoy. - the Fund for Phil Ware,
